Job Description - Fashion Designer

Fashion Designers work involves not just illustrating their designs by using drawings and computers, but also drafting patterns, supervising staff, choosing materials, selecting colours and accessories. A fashion designer may work alone or with a team of designers. The fashion industry is one of the largest manufacturers in the UK employing upward of 140,000 people. The industry is divided into the following:

Haute couture houses, where fashion garments are made for individual customers.

Wholesale couture, where clothes originally designed for the haute couture houses are made for limited retail.

Wholesale manufacturing, where the latest fashions are made for mass production on the high street, this is the largest part of the fashion industry and where most employment is. With wholesale manufacturing the designer must be able to predict the season’s trends and also be able to design for certain age ranges or price ranges that the company’s image dictates.

Training & Qualifications

To become a Fashion Designer you will usually need a diploma or a degree in fashion design.

There is very limited scope for a career as a designer in a Haute couture house, as many are designer owned but there is opportunity here for training. Listed below are Colleges or Universities offering courses in fashion design.

Personal Qualities

To become a successful fashion designer you must be artistic, very creative with good colour sense and have the ability to add individuality to your designs. You must be able to supervise others and sometimes work under pressure and to deadlines.
