Job Description - Model

There are generally two types of models. Photographic and Fashion. Either way models are employed to show not only their personal good looks, but to show clothes and accessories.

A model usually has an agent to get them work and handle fees. It's a tough world and not many get to the very top of the tree, but it is very rewarding and exciting even if you don't get up there with the Claudia's, Elle's and Naomi's.

Most models are tall.... at least 5ft 10ins (that's 178 cm).

Fashion Models

Usually employed by couturiers (people who make and design clothes), wholesalers or fashion retailers. The role of the fashion model can be as basic as being a live tailor's dummy as designers often use them to pin garments and see how they move on a real live person during the design stages. When complete the fashion model will show the finished clothes to the public on the catwalk or in private viewings if they are a house model.

Whichever way you look at it - you get to try on lots of great clothes and get paid for it!

Photographic Models

A photographic model is employed to work either on location (which could be inside or outdoors) or in a photographic studio. The work can be very varied, from modelling clothes, make-up and accessories for top fashion magazines and advertising fast cars on billboards to modelling clothes for home shopping catalogues. Hours are often very long and models are expected to pose for long periods of time.

Training & Qualifications

A good first step to take to begin a career in modelling would be to get yourself on the books of various modelling agencies. It would be a good idea to check the agency is a member of the AMA (association of models agents) as this is a good indication they are a reputable and reliable company.

Although qualifications are not necessary in becoming a model, there are full and part time courses available in modelling.

Personal Qualities

Models need to be tall, photogenic, with clear skin and good hair. Appearance is important but so is patience and a personality!
