Job Description - Photographer

Photographers aim to record images and communicate through them. Images can communicate internationally and are not affected by language or time. A photographer is responsible for capturing images. An artistic and creative ability is combined with technical skill to ensure satisfactory results.

Photographers can work in many different fields such as press photographer, commercial photographer or in crime detection.

The introduction of digital photography is changing the rules of the game and it is easier than ever to get a ‘professional’ result with relatively little skill. This is bad news for professional photographers.

Commercial Photographer

This is mainly freelance work and involves photography in fashion, advertising and editorial. Photographers will be working to a brief but will need to come up with strong ideas also. Industrial photographers work for large organizations and may take pictures for brochures. Portraiture and wedding photography is a more general area.

Photojournalist and Press Photographer

These photographers work for newspapers, magazines, periodicals and press agencies, international and national. They need the ability to write the story to accompany their pictures and must have a in depth knowledge of current affairs and news. They will also need a lot of stamina as this work in particular can be tough and demanding. As with all photography there are far more photographers than there are jobs and now journalists are being armed with digital cameras there is even less opportunity in this field.

Training & Qualifications

Photography does not have a structured way in.  Most people nowadays will study at college up to degree level. There are many courses ranging from a few weeks to full degrees. The most important ticket to an entry level job will be a strong and professional portfolio. Any published pics will be a huge asset. A popular way into photography is as an assistant. This can be very hard work and very poorly paid but you will learn a lot and make contacts who may help you get your next job. Specialist photography will need specialist training at schools, colleges or as an apprentice.

Personal Qualities

There are far more people wanting to be photographers than there are jobs so a mass of ambition is required if you are going to succeed. Money is not great and hours can be erratic so you have to have a genuine passion for what you do. Common sense, creativity, persistence and a confident personality are essential attributes. There is also a lot of technical work involved, particularly with digital cameras there can be lots of computer work.
