Job Description - Pilot
Being a commercial pilot is a dream a lot of young people have, it will be hard work but it is possible to achieve. A pilot’s career means working irregular hours, most pilots are employed by major companies that carry passengers or goods. It is a pilot’s job not only to fly the airplane but also to study the flight path and the weather and make sure the aircraft is safe by checking cargo, fuel etc. Most flying is not manual; the pilot mainly uses the automatic flying and navigational systems and works alongside a co- pilot. It is also possible to find employment flying smaller aircraft’s, or as a test pilot. Training & Qualifications To become a pilot you must hold a professional pilot’s license. Firstly you must learn to fly either privately or through the armed services, this will gain you a private pilot’s license, which is only useful for leisure. The next step is to gain a commercial pilot’s license this is possible privately but is very expensive approx. £50000 +, another way is to get sponsorship from an airline. Personal Qualities A Pilot must be physically fit, intelligent, have good eyesight, stamina, calm in any situation, reassuring and alert.
