Job Description - Retail Merchandising

The fashion world is an ever changing, fast moving, multi million pound industry with exciting career opportunities for people with a good business sense. A career in fashion merchandising involves making sure the right fashion items, in the right quantities are bought at the right time which involves a lot of planning. Merchandisers are employed by a number of companies including mail order, internet shopping, large chain stores and smaller independent stores.

Training & Qualifications


To become a fashion merchandiser it would help your career prospects if you had qualifications or experience in either fashion buying, retailing, import/export, fashion advertising, product development or retailing. Most retailers provide in-house training for their merchandisers.

Personal Qualities

To be a successful merchandiser you must be motivated, a quick thinker, competitive, with a good eye for fashion and have a very good business sense.
